Everyone is talking about AI lately, and especially ChatGPT. This new AI technology has surprising capabilities. The way it works, I sort of liken it to a more intelligent Google the way it is able to compile information for you – and then actually create something for you based on your instructions.

But the question is what are the limits of what AI can and cannot do…? I wanted to put it to the test.

So, this week, I am sharing some of the fun I had trying out ChatGPT for myself.

While I am not about to go relying on AI anytime soon, I did want to see what it was really made of… and how far it could really go when given instructions.  

There’s a phrase that is making the rounds on social media: “ChatGPT couldn’t have scripted this.” The reference is usually to some scene in a movie or a sitcom that is full of personality. The general consensus is that while AI can do many things, it can’t replace or reproduce human humor and personality.

Or can it?

I wanted it to really challenge ChatGPT and have fun at the same time. So, I asked it to write songs for me, specifically in the style of Taylor Swift or Lil Wayne. Brilliant, right?

Did ChatGPT rise to the challenge? Well, let’s look through the three songs it created…  (These songs were not edited at all- this is straight from Chat GPT.)

The first prompt I gave it, “Write a bowling rap in the style of Taylor Swift.” Here’s its response. 

Verse 1:

We’re hittin’ up the lanes tonight, feelin’ so alive,

Strap on those bowlin’ shoes, it’s time to dive,

Into the magic of those pins, glowing in the night,

With every strike we hit, our dreams take flight.

 

Chorus:

We’re bowlin’, like a Taylor-made crew,

We’ll slide, throw, and dance the night away,

In this bowlin’ love story, baby, don’t be afraid.

Okay, so… whhaaaat? AI wrote those?

Yep. That was all ChatGPT. I didn’t write a word in those songs. While I wouldn’t say they are perfect, they certainly are really good!

What blew me away the most was the fact that they were actually quite creative – and even had some personality! They also were surprisingly detailed and accurate. It was able to glean enough about each person’s individual qualities to write something accurate to each one of the bowlers I mentioned.

I will note that there were some repeated phrases, from one song to another. Some very similar lines appear in each, with words simply substituted according to the detail. That suggests that as fun as these songs are, the AI algorithm is still pulling from a limited reserve of ideas. So, used repeatedly, any creations would get a bit repetitive. There’s where the “artificial” in this becomes most obvious. I think that also reveals its limits. It’s not quite at the point of completely replacing human creativity. Thankfully.

That being said, I can see how this might become very useful, especially with helping people piece together research. After reading the songs that it wrote, I decided to see what it knew about bowling and if it could produce an accurate paragraph about the sport. Again, it was incredibly accurate.

I asked it to write a paragraph answering, “what is the trickiest thing about bowling?”

It’s response: “As an AI language model, I don’t have personal experiences or opinions, but based on research and observation, the trickiest thing about tenpin bowling is consistency. Tenpin bowling requires a combination of physical and mental skills such as proper approach, footwork, ball release, and accuracy. It can be challenging to maintain the same form and technique throughout the game, especially when the lanes change or when under pressure. Additionally, the oil pattern on the lanes can also affect the ball’s trajectory and reaction, adding another layer of complexity to the game. Therefore, maintaining consistent performance is crucial to succeed in tenpin bowling.”

Overall, I was really impressed with what AI can do. But I think the human element will always be needed for anything to remain authentic. So, don’t worry. I’m not going to be writing my weekly messages to you with AI! I am interested to see how AI becomes further integrated into society, though. Will more people start relying on it? What advances are yet to come?
