The Identity You Build When You’re Not Competing

The Identity You Build When You’re Not Competing

Take off the bowling shirt.

No logo. No name on the back. No score next to it.

Who’s left?

I ask athletes that question a lot, and I have watched a few of them go quiet. Not because they don’t have an answer. Because nobody ever asked them to find one.

So I’ll go first.

When I’m not competing, I’m a creator. I’m an optimist. I’m a nurturer. I am always looking to have impact, and none of those things require a bowling ball.

People ask me what my hobbies are and I’m not sure I have any, at least not the kind you’d list on a form. What fills me up is people. My Elite Youth Tour community. The relationships that have grown around it. And building things that might help someone. I just spent weeks developing a new product, The Approach: The Confident Bowler, and the part I loved most wasn’t finishing it. It was imagining the kid on the other end of it.

That’s who I am when I’m not in a bowling shirt. It took me a long time to know that.

Here’s why it matters.

Bowling is not who I am. It’s something I do.

That sounds simple. It is not simple when you’re competitive. When you care this much, the results start to creep into places they don’t belong. A good week and you like yourself. A bad week and you don’t. The scoreboard stops measuring your bowling and starts measuring your worth.

I have seen it in bowlers at every level. I have felt it myself. And it is not how it should be.

A score is one afternoon’s handwriting. It is not the whole story of you.

The quiet season is where you fix this, because the quiet season is the only time the scoreboard is off. No tournament this weekend. No position round. Just you, and whoever you are without the number.

That’s not empty time. That’s building time.

So if you’re a young bowler reading this, here’s what I want you to build in the slow months, and none of it has anything to do with bowling.

Self-confidence. The kind that’s still there after an open in the tenth.

Awareness of who you are. Your words for yourself, not someone else’s.

Strength and intention in how you show up in this world. On the lanes, in the car ride home, at the dinner table, with the teammate who’s having a worse day than you.

Build those, and the bowling gets better. I promise you that. But that’s not why you build them.

You build them because someday you’ll take the bowling shirt off for good, and you’ll want to like who’s left.

So, who are you when you’re not competing?

If the answer to that question feels shaky, that’s exactly what The Approach: The Confident Bowler was built for. Thirty days, one mental game skill at a time.
